New mining royalties in Quebec

Wed, 05/15/2013 - 8:17am
div class="story-teaser story-teaser-blog" div class="body" pOn Monday, the Parti québécois government announced a new mining royalty regime. Its hybrid proposal combines aspects from two types of royalty systems: profit-based and emad valorem/em royalties. In this blog post, we will demystify these ways of calculating royalties in order to best analyze the government's choice as well as what its implications are./p pLet's start with a small yet important clarification: all mining royalty regimes must deal with the cyclical nature of metal markets, which periodically increase and then decrease. When metal prices are high, mining companies naturally tend to generate more profits than when prices are low. These fluctuations obviously affect royalties./p pstrongProfit-based royalties/strong/p div class="read-more"/div /div /div pa href="http://rabble.ca/blogs/bloggers/behind-numbers/2013/05/new-mining-royalties-quebec" target="_blank"read more/a/pdiv class="feedflare" a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?a=3YSfDJAYJL8:gjMtoAqi6QA:yIl2AUoC8zA"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?d=yIl2AUoC8zA" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?a=3YSfDJAYJL8:gjMtoAqi6QA:qj6IDK7rITs"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?d=qj6IDK7rITs" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?a=3YSfDJAYJL8:gjMtoAqi6QA:dnMXMwOfBR0"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?d=dnMXMwOfBR0" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?a=3YSfDJAYJL8:gjMtoAqi6QA:F7zBnMyn0Lo"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?i=3YSfDJAYJL8:gjMtoAqi6QA:F7zBnMyn0Lo" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?a=3YSfDJAYJL8:gjMtoAqi6QA:V_sGLiPBpWU"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?i=3YSfDJAYJL8:gjMtoAqi6QA:V_sGLiPBpWU" border="0"/img/a /divimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/rabble-news/~4/3YSfDJAYJL8" height="1" width="1"/

Hands off dairy, say farmers across several Trans-Pacific Partnership countries

div class="story-teaser story-teaser-blog" div class="body" pWho leaked the Alberta government's response to the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees' unfair labour practices complaint to an Edmonton Journal political reporter, and why?/p pThis is an important question because at the time the leak took place, the government document questioning AUPE President Guy Smith's personal honesty in harsh and colourful terms was being kept confidential by the Alberta Labour Relations Board./p pThis was done as a fairly routine part of the board's effort to effect a settlement of AUPE’s complaint that the Alberta government had broken an agreement it made to end the illegal strike by about 2,500 jail guards on May 1./p div class="read-more"/div /div /div pa href="http://rabble.ca/blogs/bloggers/djclimenhaga/2013/05/who-leaked-alberta-governments-response-to-aupes-complaint-and-w" target="_blank"read more/a/pdiv class="feedflare" a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?a=iXc4OOQvPKA:emc5mAw1lfU:yIl2AUoC8zA"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?d=yIl2AUoC8zA" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?a=iXc4OOQvPKA:emc5mAw1lfU:qj6IDK7rITs"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?d=qj6IDK7rITs" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?a=iXc4OOQvPKA:emc5mAw1lfU:dnMXMwOfBR0"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?d=dnMXMwOfBR0" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?a=iXc4OOQvPKA:emc5mAw1lfU:F7zBnMyn0Lo"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?i=iXc4OOQvPKA:emc5mAw1lfU:F7zBnMyn0Lo" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?a=iXc4OOQvPKA:emc5mAw1lfU:V_sGLiPBpWU"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?i=iXc4OOQvPKA:emc5mAw1lfU:V_sGLiPBpWU" border="0"/img/a /divimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/rabble-news/~4/iXc4OOQvPKA" height="1" width="1"/

Bean leaves, bedbugs and biomimicry

Tue, 05/14/2013 - 6:41pm
div class="story-teaser story-teaser-blog" div class="body" pScientists often come up with new discoveries, technologies or theories. But sometimes they rediscover what our ancestors already knew. A couple of recent findings show we have a lot to learn from our forebears – and nature – about bugs./p pModern methods of controlling pests have consisted mainly of poisoning them with chemicals. But that’s led to problems. Pesticides kill far more than the bugs they target, and pollute air, water and soil. As we learned with the a href="http://www.panna.org/issues/persistent-poisons/the-ddt-story" rel="nofollow"widespread use of DDT/a to control agricultural pests and mosquitoes, chemicals can bioaccumulate, meaning molecules may concentrate hundreds of thousands of times up the food web – eventually reaching people./p div class="read-more"/div /div /div pa href="http://rabble.ca/blogs/bloggers/david-suzuki/2013/05/bean-leaves-bedbugs-and-biomimicry" target="_blank"read more/a/pdiv class="feedflare" a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?a=R0VdeoXGGEg:o74Ex6WgodQ:yIl2AUoC8zA"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?d=yIl2AUoC8zA" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?a=R0VdeoXGGEg:o74Ex6WgodQ:qj6IDK7rITs"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?d=qj6IDK7rITs" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?a=R0VdeoXGGEg:o74Ex6WgodQ:dnMXMwOfBR0"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?d=dnMXMwOfBR0" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?a=R0VdeoXGGEg:o74Ex6WgodQ:F7zBnMyn0Lo"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?i=R0VdeoXGGEg:o74Ex6WgodQ:F7zBnMyn0Lo" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?a=R0VdeoXGGEg:o74Ex6WgodQ:V_sGLiPBpWU"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?i=R0VdeoXGGEg:o74Ex6WgodQ:V_sGLiPBpWU" border="0"/img/a /divimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/rabble-news/~4/R0VdeoXGGEg" height="1" width="1"/

Being old ain't what it used to be

Tue, 05/14/2013 - 2:40pm
div class="story-teaser story-teaser-blog" div class="body" p"Old age is not for sissies," said Bette Davis. Indeed, it is not, but the images from our childhood of what it meant to be "old" have changed dramatically. Of course, as I enter my 60th year, my perspective on what it means to be "old," of necessity, shifts. As another popular aphorism, puts it "the hardest thing to decide is when middle age begins." Thanks to advances in health care and a focus on healthy living, Canadians are living longer. And today's senior has different issues and challenges than in our grandparents' day. I see it every day, as my riding of Saanich-Gulf Islands is one of those with the highest proportion of older citizens. While so much in the mass media sees only the negatives of this aging demographic, there is much to celebrate./p div class="read-more"/div /div /div pa href="http://rabble.ca/blogs/bloggers/elizabeth-may/2013/05/being-old-aint-what-it-used-to-be" target="_blank"read more/a/pdiv class="feedflare" a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?a=cdrA66Z7of8:zJLUQ6fO9_M:yIl2AUoC8zA"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?d=yIl2AUoC8zA" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?a=cdrA66Z7of8:zJLUQ6fO9_M:qj6IDK7rITs"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?d=qj6IDK7rITs" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?a=cdrA66Z7of8:zJLUQ6fO9_M:dnMXMwOfBR0"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?d=dnMXMwOfBR0" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?a=cdrA66Z7of8:zJLUQ6fO9_M:F7zBnMyn0Lo"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?i=cdrA66Z7of8:zJLUQ6fO9_M:F7zBnMyn0Lo" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?a=cdrA66Z7of8:zJLUQ6fO9_M:V_sGLiPBpWU"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?i=cdrA66Z7of8:zJLUQ6fO9_M:V_sGLiPBpWU" border="0"/img/a /divimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/rabble-news/~4/cdrA66Z7of8" height="1" width="1"/

Media Watch: About those corporate media editorials endorsing the BC Liberals

Tue, 05/14/2013 - 10:59am
div class="story-teaser story-teaser-blog" div class="body" pIt's Election Day in B.C. and the NDP is widely expected to end a dozen years of rule by the BC Liberals. As usual in B.C. elections, major corporate-owned newspapers have come out in favour of the corporate-backed Liberals. But the editorials are less than ringing endorsements and -- in the case of the emGlobe and Mail/em -- less than totally accurate. And there's one big editorial endorsement missing.nbsp;/p pemThe Vancouver Sun/em editorial board has -- in an unusual move for them -- declined to issue an election editorial endorsement.
