The problem with homeless counts and M-455

Tue, 04/15/2014 - 10:35am
div class="field field-type-date field-field-story-publish-date" div class="field-items" div class="field-item odd" span class="date-display-single"Tuesday, April 15, 2014/span /div /div /div div class="field field-type-text field-field-summary" div class="field-items" div class="field-item odd" Conservative MP Peter Goldring introduced motion M-455, which seeks to develop a nationally shared definition of homelessness and a common methodology. The only problem is homeless counts don#039;t work. /div /div /div pIt's not unreasonable to think that a good starting point for solving a social problem like homelessness, is to get a handle on exactly how many people are affected. Especially when you hear numbers being bandied about like a href="http://www.wellesleyinstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/SOHC2103.pdf" rel="nofollow"150,000 to 300,000 people in Canada are homeless/a. That is, after all, a pretty significant difference. Which is it: 150 or 300? Who wouldn't be tempted to get out there and start counting? That's exactly what Conservative MP Peter Goldring suggested we do -- on a national scale./pdiv class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-for-node" div class="field-items" div class="field-item odd" img src="http://rabble.ca/sites/rabble/files/imagecache/120-width-scaled/node-images/4778258681_7d00f4f87d_z.jpg" alt="Photo: flickr/One Off Man Mental" title="Photo: flickr/One Off Man Mental" width="120" height="90" class="imagecache imagecache-120-width-scaled imagecache-default imagecache-120-width-scaled_default"/ /div /div /div pa href="http://rabble.ca/news/2014/04/problem-homeless-counts-and-m-455" target="_blank"read more/a/pdiv class="feedflare" a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?a=L4dkvBFLWvA:qHI-qoXj6-I:yIl2AUoC8zA"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?d=yIl2AUoC8zA" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?a=L4dkvBFLWvA:qHI-qoXj6-I:qj6IDK7rITs"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?d=qj6IDK7rITs" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?a=L4dkvBFLWvA:qHI-qoXj6-I:dnMXMwOfBR0"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?d=dnMXMwOfBR0" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?a=L4dkvBFLWvA:qHI-qoXj6-I:F7zBnMyn0Lo"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?i=L4dkvBFLWvA:qHI-qoXj6-I:F7zBnMyn0Lo" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?a=L4dkvBFLWvA:qHI-qoXj6-I:V_sGLiPBpWU"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?i=L4dkvBFLWvA:qHI-qoXj6-I:V_sGLiPBpWU" border="0"/img/a /divimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/rabble-news/~4/L4dkvBFLWvA" height="1" width="1"/

Temporary foreign workers: How federal settlement policies overlook some newcomers

Tue, 04/15/2014 - 9:20am
div class="story-teaser story-teaser-blog" div class="body" pManitoba has embarked on aggressive immigration strategies to attract newcomers to settle in a variety of communities in the province with the purpose of meeting local labour force demands. In response to these trends, it is necessary to have appropriate and effective support systems to assist in the long-term settlement and integration of the increasing number of newcomers. Prior to the federal government's changes to the delivery model of settlement services in 2012, these services were a provincial responsibility in Manitoba, Quebec and British Columbia. div class="read-more"/div /div /div pa href="http://rabble.ca/blogs/bloggers/policyfix/2014/04/temporary-foreign-workers-how-federal-settlement-policies-overlook-" target="_blank"read more/a/pdiv class="feedflare" a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?a=cbbZyTivdec:2TkVU4InVAk:yIl2AUoC8zA"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?d=yIl2AUoC8zA" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?a=cbbZyTivdec:2TkVU4InVAk:qj6IDK7rITs"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?d=qj6IDK7rITs" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?a=cbbZyTivdec:2TkVU4InVAk:dnMXMwOfBR0"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?d=dnMXMwOfBR0" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?a=cbbZyTivdec:2TkVU4InVAk:F7zBnMyn0Lo"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?i=cbbZyTivdec:2TkVU4InVAk:F7zBnMyn0Lo" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?a=cbbZyTivdec:2TkVU4InVAk:V_sGLiPBpWU"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/rabble-news?i=cbbZyTivdec:2TkVU4InVAk:V_sGLiPBpWU" border="0"/img/a /divimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/rabble-news/~4/cbbZyTivdec" height="1" width="1"/
