Solidarity with the Tamils now to stop this "brazen openly racist war."

Yesterday I visited the Tamil sit-in in front of the US embassy. After a couple of months of protesting in Ottawa and Toronto in the largest demonstrations in memory with little response from the government, the Tamil community has decided to block University Avenue demanding that the Canadian and US government pressure Sri Lanka to stop killing civilians and allow humanitarian aid into to assist Tamils trapped in the war zone. More than 6,500 ethnic Tamils are already dead according to the UN.
The situation is urgent. Yesterday the Canadian Tamil Congress wrote to the Prime Minister: 'Tamil Canadians are fearful that in the next 24 to 48 hours a civilian bloodbath will ensue if the government of Sri Lanka does not reciprocate the LTTE's (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) offer to a ceasefire.' UN estimates are that 6,500 ethnic Tamils, mostly civilians, have already been killed in the conflict. It is heartbreaking to talk to the demonstrators, almost all of whom have relatives in the war zone.
Indian writer Arundhati Roy has said "What is happening right now in Sri Lanka, and what is being so effectively hidden from public scrutiny, is a brazen, openly racist war." in an article published in Alternet. As Roy points out, the only reason the Sri Lankan government can get away with this massacre is that it is using the lingo of the war on terror making every Tamil into a terrorist until they can prove otherwise.
I am working with others to produce a statement from academics and other prominent Canadians demanding action from the Canadian government to demand an immediate ceasefire from the Sri Lankan government and to allow humanitarian aid into the war zone.
Many people are confused because of horror stories about the Tamil Tigers. But whatever we may think of the Tamil Tigers, it is the human rights catastrophe that must be of primary concern and in that regard it is the Sri Lankan government that has the responsibility to end the bloodshed. There will be a solidarity march organized by the Canadian Peace Alliance and some unions on May 9. It's about time, progessive people outside the Tamil community speak out in solidarity.
In the long term too, we need to support the right to self-determination of the Tamil people. It was colonial Britain that created the false country of Ceylon putting together two peoples, Over the years the majority has insisted the Tamil learn the Singhalese language if they wanted to succeed, refused to recognize two referendums for independence and generally oppressed the Tamil minority. Sound familiar?
Please do whatever you can. Write to the media who are being bombarded by people complaining about minor traffic jams downtown. Inform yourself on the situation and speak to your friends. Visit the protests in your city. Call the Prime Minister's office and Michael Ignatieff's office and tell them you want action against the Sri Lankan government. It's past time to support the valient struggle of the Tamil Community to stop the slaughter of their people.

Dear Judy If 'Caroline Smith'
Dear Judy
If 'Caroline Smith' is truely who she says she is, then i am Michelle Obama! We will end up going back 2500 years if we were to discuss the merits of Tamil claims to Sri Lanka, but now, we are discussing the public disruption thats being ongoing in Ottawa and Toronto since January. If the protest / rally is meant to bring attention to the plight of the innocent civilians trapped in the war zone they are certainly not doing a great job for a few simple reasons as was pointed out by Mr.Jason Kenny in Ottawa. These are
1. You dont DEMAND and DICTATE foriegn poicy to the Canadian goverment to take action against another soveriegn state..You ASK.
2. You dont ASK by holding the population at RANSOM and inconveniencing everyone, no, you do it over the weekend, quietly
3. 3rds a charm, you dont wave flags of a designated terrorist organisation in public, just think a few muslims waving flags of Ossama Bin Larden and cronies DEMANDING Canada to withdraw from Afghanistan?? There cannot be dual standards in dealing with this issue. These protestors sould be arrested on terrorism charges
4. Last but not the least - The war would have been over 4 weeks ago, if the SL govt. wants to commit genocide. The reason there is a standoff is these LTTE 'heroes' are holding human shields, preventing the innocent from fleeing the rebel area. If these protestors in Toronto truely care about their loved once, why do they carry the flag of the very same people (LTTE) who holds them hostage. And you madam, need to go to Sri Lanka before making any statements about it, you just need to visit Colombo to see how 1 million tamils live in harmony with the rest of the ethnic groups..
Canadians are against the Genocide of Tamils in Sri Lanka.
We, Canadians are very sympathetic people. We are against any form of Genocide. We canot just sit and watch any injustice. The Government of Sri Lanka is killing own Tamil citizens every day for last 3 months. According to UN, they have killed more than 6,500 and injured 14,000 innocent Tamils so far. If the Tamil Tigers hold the Sinhalese as a human shield, will they do the same thing? Any responsible Government will do this kind of war crimes? Where are the Buddhists of this country? Are in support for the killings of innocent children and babies? Do you think, the Tamils in Colombo are living in harmony? They have the nightmare of white van abductions and police searches every day. We know better than what you think.
Ask why you should care
Whether anyone has read this article or not, when dealing with a situation like this in any part of the world, one should ask themself "Why should I care?"
One should care to see past the politics and greed for power. A simple step would be to allow a greater degree of Transparency. This would seem impossible if one was to ask these questions. Why is the Sri Lankan government preventing news reporters and NGO's from entering the declared Safe Zone? Why aren't reporters allowed to report news of the wrong doings by the Sri Lankan government? Why are reporters being assassinated for critizing the actions of the Sri Lankan government? Why are news agencies in Sri Lanka being raided by the government itself?
Here are some facts to improve transparency:
-- April 29, 2009 the Sri Lankan Army killed about 290 unarmed civilians and wounded about 300 (this includes children, women, and men)
(if anyone needs footage, please let me know; Warning: graphic scenes not suited for a younger audience)
-- April 28, 2009 at 10pm Sri Lankan time, the Sri Lankan government started bombing the Declared Safe Zone from all sides (land and sea, unsure about airstrikes at that time)
but just a few days before, the Sri Lankan government said that it will stop using large Artillery, Cluster bombs, Shelling and Air bombardments on hospitals and other areas in the Safe Zone (however, that promise was not kept by the government)
-- Red Cross says hundreds of people have been killed in the government offensive since Monday and about 1,000 badly wounded people desperately need treatment.

- Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the Sri Lankan defence secretary, said: "That is a joke" when LTTE declared a truce a few days ago.
He also said:
"They (the LTTE) were not fighting with us, they were running from us. There is no need of a ceasefire. They must surrender. That is it."
With that said, why is there the need to keep attacking the Safe Zone with civilians in it?

Outrage in Sri Lanka
This is awful! What's hapenning to the world today? Who are these people and why do they get away with killing innocent people? What will it take for this to end? Is there not a role that The United Nations should be playing here? How is it that a Singhalese can get away with killing an innocent Tamil and yet some people die for killing their neighbour or a stranger?
WHAT WILL IT TAKE TO END THE VIOLENCE?
Solidarity with Tamils
Thanks Judy Rebick. You have opened my eye to see the problem very clearly. I feel sorry for the Tamil Canadians. They need our support to stop the genocide of Tamils in Sri Lanka. We have to be sensitive to their loss and pain. Traffic jams are not a big deal.
