My not so secret life as a movie buff

Sometime in 2006, I met Cathi Bond, whom  I knew as the CBC's DVD Diva (a title she hates but I love) .  I'm not sure why,  but we got into an argument about Kill Bill I (a film which she loved but I hated).  It was a debate that reflected the difference in generation, she's about 20 years younger than me, and I realized later cultural sensibilities.  We both like action films but she loves the really over the top ones, especially Korean.  She asked if I wanted to debate Kill Bill for rabble radio, which had recently launched as the flagship of the new rabble podcast network, the brainchild of rabble's creative genius Wayne McPhail.

I have always been a film lover with what some people who stereotype feminists would think as pretty catholic taste.  So the idea of discussing movies with someone who really knows her stuff appealed to me.  The generation difference added some spice and our totally different taste in picking films stirred the pot.

The result was Reel Women , which I think provides the most lively film discussions since Siskel and Ebert.  We post every two weeks.  You can list en to it on rabble or subscribe to it on ITunes.  If you like it and want to know when a new episode is posted you can join our Facebook group. Of course I love the name, which is a play on that awful anti-feminist group REAL Women whom I had to deal with when I was President of NAC.

When we started, we concentrated on new DVD releases but now we recommend one new DVD and one hidden and sometimes not so hidden gem.  This week we are talking about Before Tomorrow, an astonishing and moving story about an Innuit grandmother and her grandson.  Cathi thought it would be "one of Judy's earnest snore fests" but she loved it.  And Cathi recommended Jean De Fleurette, a great French film from the 1980's that I remembered liking but on second watching I loved it and so did she.  This time we agreed but often don't.

Cathi and I have become friends in the process and even though we both have busy lives.  She's working on a novel that I'm sure will be amazing.  We keep posting every two weeks.  We love talking to each other and it's fun sharing our movie pics with others.  Like lots of producers of social media, we don't get any money for our efforts.  We do it because we love doing it.

If you like films, and enjoy intelligent coversation about them, check out Reel Women.  Let us know what you think either on our Facebook page or right here in the comments section.
